5 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Videographer Before Booking

Choosing your wedding videographer is a big decision. This is the person who will capture the voices, emotions, and fleeting moments of your wedding day — the things you’ll want to relive long after the cake is gone and the flowers have wilted.

Before you sign a contract, asking the right questions can help ensure you’re hiring someone whose style, process, and personality truly align with you. Here are five thoughtful questions to ask your wedding videographer before booking — along with my own approach, so you can see how these answers really matter.

1. How Would You Describe Your Videography Style?

Wedding videography styles range from highly cinematic to fully documentary - and everything in between. Understanding a videographer’s style helps you know how your story will be told.

My approach: I describe my wedding video style as cinematic documentary. I love capturing the day exactly as it unfolds (the in-between moments, your guests, the small details) while editing in a very story-driven, cinematic way. This gives you beautiful visuals, an emotional narrative, and a comprehensive film that truly reflects your wedding day as a whole.

SEO note: If you’re searching terms like cinematic wedding videographer or documentary wedding film, this blended style may be exactly what you’re looking for.

2. How Do You Capture Audio During the Ceremony and Speeches?

Audio can make or break a wedding film. Clear vows and speeches are what allow you to feel the emotion again years later.

My approach: I’ve experienced my fair share of audio hiccups over the years - and each one has taught me how important backups are. I use personal microphones on the groom, officiant, and bride (when the dress allows), and I always plug a secondary audio source into the DJ’s board or speakers.

This year, I’m also implementing a microphone directly on the mic used for speeches, creating a third audio source. With multiple layers of audio capture, there’s no way we’re missing a moment - whether it’s vows, toasts, or spontaneous laughter.

3. What Is Your Turnaround Time, and How Will We Receive Our Film?

Editing a wedding film takes time, care, and intention. While it’s tempting to want everything immediately, quality storytelling doesn’t happen overnight.

My approach: My turnaround time is typically six to eight weeks after the wedding day. This allows me to give each film my full attention, carefully craft the story, and triple-check that I truly love the final product. If there’s ever a delay, my clients are always informed - communication matters.

I value quality over speed, always.

When it comes to delivery, I provide both digital galleries and personalized USB drives, so you’ll have a downloadable version and a physical keepsake to hold onto.

4. How Do You Work With Photographers and Other Vendors?

Your videographer doesn’t work in a vacuum — they’re part of a larger team making your wedding day run smoothly.

My approach: I see the photographer as my partner in crime. We’re constantly communicating about posing, ceremony angles, and overall flow... All while keeping the vibes relaxed and fun. As for other vendors, my job is to make their lives easier while still doing my own job well. Open communication ensures everyone wins, especially you.

5. What Do You Love Most About Filming Weddings?

This question has nothing to do with gear — and everything to do with heart.

My answer: Easy. Love. And not just between the couple. I love capturing the love of parents, grandparents, friends, extended family, and everyone who helped make the day happen. You can feel the warmth in a room on a wedding day, and getting to preserve that energy is truly a dream come true.

What do you think?

Your wedding videographer isn’t just documenting events — they’re preserving emotions, voices, and moments that can never be recreated. They also are someone you work closely with all day! So compatibility matters.

By asking these questions before booking, you’ll gain clarity, confidence, and insight into who you’re trusting with your story. When your wedding day goes by in a blur (because it will), your wedding film will be there to bring it all back, beautifully and authentically.
